A Giant Engine

I never knew we had the most powerful working steam engine remaining in Europe here in Sheffield. It takes a couple of friends visiting from out of town with a tourist's eye view to find out such things. To be honest I wasn't aware that we had an Industrial Museum at all either. Though it makes sense when you actually think about it. Visited the Kelham Island Museum today and they've got lots of interesting things on show, of course most of it is related to the steel industry as that's Sheffield's thing. The main exhibit is the River Don Engine the massive 12,000 horse power steam engine which once drove the heavy plate mill. It's quite impressive how fast something so large can go and how fast it can change direction. I took a video of it, but unfortunately I didn't catch it a full speed as my battery ran out! See the video here.

  1. Blimey, that's awesome. Great vid too, you have a steady hand. Nice trip out - that was a bit different, wasn't it?
